Meg Ryan
Meg Ryan is a blonde-haired blue-eyed
woman with an exuberant personality. She was born Margaret Mary Emily Hyra to
Susan (Duggan) she was the daughter of an English teacher and a former actress.
Harry Hyra was a math teacher. Her family heritage includes Ruthenian, Polish
and Irish as well as German. ("Hyra") is her Ruthenian surname and
"Ryan" is her maternal grandmother's maiden name. Meg was graduated
in June 1979 Bethel highschool, Bethel. When she moved to New York, she
attended New York University where she majored in journalism. In order to earn
money while working on her degree, Meg went into acting with her new name Meg
Ryan. Her screen debut came in 1981 with a short appearance as Candice Bergen’s
daughter in George Cukor's last film Rich and Famous (1981). She was cast in
the character as Betsy in the soap opera The World Turns the World Turns (1956)
after she auditioned. She was in the show's cast from 1982 until 1984. Meg was
also a character in the TV show One of the Boys (1982), however, this show was
soon ended. She relocated to Hollywood in 1984 and was offered an opportunity
to be a part of the western-themed television show Wildside (1985). Meg's role
in the blockbuster film Top Gun (1986) led to her being included in Steven
Spielberg's Innerspace (1987) in which she co-starred with Dennis Quaid. In
D.O.A.'s remake, she again starred alongside Quaid. (1988) and then got married
on Saint Valentine's Day 1991. Meg was in When Harry Met Sally... (1989), that
made the scene at the restaurant famous. Meg was nominated both for the Golden
Globe as well as the BAFTA. In 1990, she co-starred with Tom Hanks in Joe
Versus the Volcano (1990) and this time she played three roles as
DeDe/Angelica/Patricia. In 1993, she starred alongside Tom in Sleepless in
Seattle (1993) and was nominated again for the Golden Globe. Meg determined to
stand out from the crowd in 1994 when she played the role of Meg as a
mother/wife who has a drinking problem in When a Man Loves a Woman (1994). She
went back to being "cute" following that film with I.Q. (1994) as
well as French Kiss (1996). In 1994, Meg was awarded the Harvard Hasty Pudding
Award as "Woman of the Year" and was selected as being one of
"The 50 most beautiful people in the world 1994" by People Magazine.
